What EXIF holds
The ones everybody expects, and the ones they do not
Expected
- Camera make and model
- Date and time of the shot
- GPS coordinates, when location was on
- Exposure, aperture, focal length
Unexpected
- Serial numbers of the body and often the lens — identical across every photo you have posted
- Shutter count, which orders your photographs in time even without timestamps
- Timezone offset, which narrows down where you were with no GPS at all
- How the fix was obtained — satellite, cell tower or Wi-Fi — and which way the camera pointed
- Air pressure on some phones, which is a floor of a building
- The owner name stored in the camera's firmware
Every field above is defined by the Exif standard and written by cameras without being asked for.
